What the Places We Call Home Have Taught Us | RES IPSA

What each of our stores has taught us (so far)

We don’t commission market research before we open a store.

We go where we’re drawn—places we love, cities that move us, communities that feel aligned with what we believe: creativity, curiosity, connection.

From Aspen’s stillness to New York’s velocity, every Res Ipsa location started with a feeling. We walked the streets, met the people, got a sense of the rhythm. Then we stayed. Built something. Grew with it.

Not every decision was predictable. But every one made sense in context—in a moment where we trusted what we felt.

Some cities expanded us. Others grounded us. A few felt like leaps—but they taught us something lasting.

Here’s what these five places gave us.

And what we’re still learning from them.

These are five place that helped build Res Ipsa.

And the lessons we’re still learning from them.

New York

Endless possibilities.
Inspires us to think big and be original.

New York doesn’t wait for you to figure it out. It expects clarity, speed, and conviction. And in return, it sharpens your instincts.

Almost a decade ago, we were here with our first product—a handmade necktie. We weren’t called Res Ipsa yet, but the idea was already forming. We made those ties with the same maker who produced Ralph Lauren’s first necktie in 1967. Even then, we knew we wanted to create something different—and that New York was the right place to begin.

Now, with a store in the city, it still reminds us to think big, cut through the noise, and create what doesn’t exist yet. Traveling to NYC this winter for a weekend getaway? We've got you covered.

Los Angeles

Don’t be afraid to venture outside your comfort zone.
Not many people would drive from Malibu to K-Town for dinner, but LA is a sprawling wonder with something awesome in every neighborhood.

LA isn’t one city—it’s dozens. And the magic is scattered.

We’ve driven across town for a single meal or a single meeting. From Santa Monica to Frogtown to South-Central to Larchmont, LA constantly reminds us that discovery takes effort. And that venturing outside what’s easy is where originality lives. Wondering what food would bring you across town? Check out our blog.

Aspen

Appreciate the seasons of life.
There is something about nature that soothes the soul. Aspen has four dramatically different seasons, each is amazing. If you have gratitude for the season that you’re in, you won’t wish you were experiencing something different.

Aspen doesn’t try to stay the same. It fully becomes whatever season it’s in—and then becomes something else again. That’s what we’ve come to love about it.

There’s momentum in summer, stillness in fall, silence in winter, and newness in spring. Every phase has a different kind of beauty. Being here taught us that growth doesn’t need to be constant. Some seasons are for reflection. Some are for building. Some are just for being. Daydream about the winter ahead with our postcard from Aspen.

Nantucket

Manifest your dreams.
On our first visit to Nantucket we stood across the street from our store on India Street (then occupied by a different tenant) and we said: “That’s going to be our store one day.” Today, it’s our store.

We said it before we had a plan. But we meant it.

For years, we kept returning to Nantucket—and kept walking by that storefront. Eventually, it opened up. And when it did, we were ready. Nantucket taught us the power of naming the thing you want, even if it feels out of reach at first. Feeling nostalgic for warmer summer days? Dive into our postcard below.

Paris

Follow your heart.
There were easier places to open, but we love Paris and we want to be a part of the fabric of it. We love being in the Sixth Arrondissement so we wanted our store to be in the part of the city we love the most.

Paris wasn’t a market opportunity—it was a love story.

We knew we wanted to be in the Sixth Arrondissement. We’d walked those streets, admired the windows, soaked up the quiet elegance of the neighborhood. When the right space opened up, we took it. Not because it was perfect on paper—but because it felt right.

Paris reminded us that some decisions are meant to be felt. And that’s reason enough.

If you want to know how to spend a perfect day in the neighborhood, check out our blog.

The through line?

We show up.

These stores aren’t just places where we sell things. They’re where we’ve learned to listen. To lead with instinct. To take risks. To stay curious.

They’ve taught us that place matters. That pacing matters. That inspiration isn’t something you chase—it’s something you notice when you’re present enough to see it.

And no matter where we go next, these lessons go with us.
