Q&A with Josh & Odini on the Summer 2025 Collection | RES IPSA

Our Summer 2025 Collection is now available in stores and online.

Inspired by a week on the Nile, this collection reflects a season of movement—hot days, cool nights, and the feeling of being in between. We worked with handwoven cotton, vintage matelassé, and solid-color crochet to create pieces that transition seamlessly from place to place and moment to moment. Every item is made in small quantities at our Marrakech atelier, using zero-waste techniques and time-honored craftsmanship.

We caught up with our co-founders, Josh & Odini, from Marrakech to talk about how this collection came together, and where it’s meant to take you.

Q: Was there a particular place, trip, or moment that sparked the idea for this collection?
A: We took a Nile cruise in 2024 with two of our team members from Marrakech on a dahabiya sail boat, which is how they traversed the Nile for centuries.

Q: How did that setting influence what you made?
A: The days were hot and the nights were cool. Inspired by a week on the Nile, we envisioned a sophisticated but casual collection that would transition from the sweltering sun to the evening chill.

Q: What fabrics or materials were you most excited to work with this season?
A: We sourced these vintage matelassé tablecloths from the 1950s. Matelassé is a weaving or stitching technique yielding a pattern that appears quilted or padded and meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched quilts made in Marseilles, France. We washed them and we made workshirts from it. As a finished touch we added multi-colored embroidery to the edges. It’s subtle and amazing.

Q: How would you describe the Summer '25 color palette in three words?
A:
White, blue, and a dash of green.

Q: Was there a piece in this collection that came together unexpectedly?
A: Late in the design process we still felt like there was piece of the puzzle missing. We thought about what would make it feel complete and concluded we need a camp shirt. But not just any would do. We developed an appliqué technique to create images from leftover fabrics. We made palm trees, flowers, and abstract shapes. It’s serious and unexpected at the same time.

Q: Something that surprised you?
A: Summer can mean a lot of things—leisure, travel, heat, movement.

Q: How did you design for the way people feel in summer?
A: Our customer is a traveler, which means not being in one place or one climate for too long. We needed silhouettes and cuts that would be appropriate for cool Aspen and Nantucket summer evenings, or sweltering New York afternoons.

Q: Were there specific silhouettes or styling intentions tied to that?
A: The linen camp shirts are perfect for the heat but the handwoven workshirts are an ideal layering piece when the sun sets.

Q: What’s one item from this collection you’ll be living in this summer?
A: Handwoven white pants and the handwoven long shirt.

Q: Where are you wearing it?
A: As many airports as possible.

Q: Do you have a favorite pattern or detail in this season’s release?
A: The solid ecru crochet hoodie is a lot of fun. We’ve done many colorful iterations of the crochet hoodie, but this one is all one color. We also may a crochet crop top in the solid ecru colorway.

Q: What makes it stand out?
A: The buttery off-white still has the gorgeous floral textures of the crochet technique we use, but it’s a totally unique expression.

Q: What cities or landscapes do you imagine people wearing this collection in?
A: We’re always thinking about what to wear in the places that we go frequently: Aspen, Malibu, Nantucket, and Paris.

Q: Are there places you hope these pieces go?
A: It’s always thrilling to see customers tag us in photos from their travels. The harder the place is to get to, the better it feels when we see it!

Q: How do you think this collection continues or builds on Res Ipsa’s story?
A: The handweaving process has become integral to the brand identity because it is a way to create high-quality, soulful fabric with zero waste. It’s pretty extraordinary that we are able to weave exactly what we want and exactly how much we need. Nobody in the industry operates that way.

Q: Was there a value or theme you wanted to bring forward more clearly this time?
A: Good things take time. Our production is very limited with only a few pieces in each store. We understand that these items are going to sell out.. We are committed to making products responsibly, with zero waste, and with skilled artisans who make beautiful things by hand.

Q: What were some of the challenges of putting together this drop?
A: Handweaving is a painstaking process. It takes an entire day to tie the warp threads to prepare the loom, and each weaver can make about three meters a day. The weight and feel of the fabric cannot be replicated by machine. The result has soul. When we determined the size of the collection and the deadline to get it into our stores, we know we had no time to waste.

Q: Any design hurdles, material delays, or creative detours?
A: When we were nearly finished with the bulk of production, we felt like we needed one more piece to complete the collection. We came up with the appliqué designs for our camp shirts. They’re all handsewn graphic images in the shape of flowers and palm trees. It’s feels retro and modern at the same time.

Q: Is there anything in this collection that feels like a first or a risk?
A:
When you create the art that you want to consume–whether you’re a musician, a painter or a clothing designer–you are your audience, so there is no risk. If you’re satisfied, mission accomplished. We always hope that people like what we create, but that’s a happy byproduct of making beautiful pieces that we’re proud of.

Q: If this drop had a motto, what would it be?
A: Find Your Way.

Q: Describe Summer ’25 in a sentence or in a few words.
A: This is the season to pursue the things your heart tells you are good and honorable and true. Find Your Way.
